Biography
Dylan is the current principal of Auburn Symphony, served as substitute principal for the Brevard Philharmonic in North Carolina for two years, and has performed with the Knoxville Opera Company, Stockton Symphony, and Sacramento Philharmonic. He was assistant principal cello in the PBS documentary “Chautauqua at 150: Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise”, and played concerts in a variety of studio orchestras and jazz band/big band ensembles in Rochester, New York and around Sacramento, California. Dylan made his soloist debut as a teenager, performing “Cello Fantasia in E minor”, a piece written for/dedicated to him, with the Sacramento “Music Beyond Borders” string orchestra. In Fall 2026, Dylan will be a featured soloist with the Auburn Symphony, playing Beethoven Triple Concerto in their Masterworks concert series.
Teaching music has been one of Dylan’s biggest roles since he began offering private lessons at age 18 – and he has since taught private lessons to students aged 5-74. He is currently cello faculty at the Pacific Institute of Music in Folsom, where he also provides special lecture classes and performs in faculty recitals. While attending the University of Tennessee, Dylan gained two years of collegiate teaching experience, where he provided individual lessons and led studio technique and performance classes. His research in masterclass pedagogy was a highlight of his graduate studies, and he has taught cello masterclasses in both Tennessee and California. Chamber coaching is also a specialty of his – he has been cello faculty for the Sacramento Youth Symphony’s Summer Chamber Workshop for the past six years, including a brief appearance as the junior week’s conductor in 2024. Dylan also worked as a chamber coach and administrative assistant for the Knoxville Youth Symphony chamber program from 2023-2025. A passionate educator, Dylan has spent over 5 years volunteer-teaching in his free time, providing free lessons to students through multiple non-profit programs across the United States.
An avid cellist since his youth, Dylan began studying cello at a collegiate level at age 16, attending California State University – Sacramento, learning from Professor Andrew Luchansky, and serving as principal of the CSUS orchestra starting age 17 . Continuing his music education, Dylan earned a Bachelor’s Degree in Cello Performance with a Certificate in World Music from the Eastman School of Music, where he studied under Professor David Ying. He graduated with a Master’s Degree in Cello Performance from the Natalie Haslam College of Music in the University of Tennessee – Knoxville, where he worked as a Graduate Teaching Assistant to Professor Wesley Baldwin’s cello studio.
